It’s Time for Summer Reading!

Yesterday was the last day of school for Fairfax County, which means most, if not all, of the Northern Virginia school systems are now out of school for the summer. That means it’s time for the Summer Reading Programs to begin. There are a lot of different programs in this area, so I will list them with a small blurb below.

Fairfax County, has a program called Dig Into Reading that runs from June 18 through August 31. There are a number of events during the program from family to school age to teen events. The number of books your child will need to read depends on their grade level, and in order to get the prize, book lists must be turned in  to your local branch by no later than August 31.

Alexandria City has two different programs, the Summer Quest, Jr. program for ages 0-5, Summer Quest program for ages 6-12 and Beneath the Surface for Middle and High School Students. All of the programs have different events and reading requirements. The program runs from June 17-August 31 and you can sign up at the Alexandria Program Page.

Arlington County also has three programs. They divide their programs into Babies and Preschoolers, Elementary Schoolers, and Middle and High Schoolers. Babies, Preschoolers and Elementary Schoolers read 10 books, Middle and High Schoolers read 4. Sign up online or at any Arlington Public Library location. Dates for completion vary by group, so make sure you check to see when you have to have your completed bookmark turned in to get your prize!

Loudon County Public Library has summer reading for all ages! Programs are divided into four age groups: 0-5, 6-11, 12-18 and 19 and up. Anyone can join, but you do have to go in to your local branch to sign up. There are summer programs, and even a writing competition for adults. Be sure to attend programs, and watch your dates! Loudon county schools get out earlier, so their summer reading program runs from June 10-August 5.

What are you reading this summer? Whether you join a reading program or not, it’s a great time to catch up on all those books you missed during the year! Leave me a comment telling me what books you really want to read. (I’ve got a list of 20 for a class I’m taking.)
